The scope of the examination
The four major areas of nursing — adult health nursing, nursing of children, psychiatric/mental health nursing and maternal/infant nursing — form the foundation of the examination. The concepts tested include:
- Safe, effective care focusing on the management of a client’s care so that the client is free from harm, from iatrogenic illness or from injury during care.
- Health promotion and maintenance focusing on the client’s need for continued growth and development throughout the life span and prevention and early treatment of disease.
- Nursing care related to the client’s need for psychosocial integrity including assessment of the client’s mental health and sources of emotional support, the client’s adjustment to a physical or emotional impairment, and the client’s need for increased or decreased sensory stimulation.
- Physiological integrity focusing on the adequate functioning of the client’s bodily systems, including the respiratory, circulatory, urinary, gastrointestinal, neurological, immune, endocrine, reproductive, integumentary and musculoskeletal systems.
Also incorporated throughout the examination are such concepts as the nursing process, caring, communication and documentation, and teaching/learning.
