What is the Credential Verification Service for New York State (CVS)?
As required by New York State, registered nurses, practical nurses, physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, occupational therapists or occupational therapy assistants applying for licensure in that state and educated and/or born outside the United States, must have educational and licensure credentials verified by CGFNS. New York State evaluates the credentials. This service is specifically for New York and no other state.
How long does the process take?
It depends. We give your schools and license authorities six months maximum to submit the required documents after we send them the first request letter. The first request letter goes out after we have received your payment and the authorization forms. After the 180-days period, your report is issued to New York within 45 business days, with or without documents.
Once the report is issued to New York State, does that mean I am approved?
No. CGFNS verifies the authenticity of the documents, but the New York State Education Department evaluates them. You need to have applied to New York State as well as for our service. If you have not, go to http://www.op.nysed.gov/pdffiles.htm.
Timing
I’ve applied for the Credential Verification Service for New York State, and am still waiting for approval to take the NCLEX®. My status online is “Ready for Final Review”. When is a good time to take the TOEFL® and start applying for VisaScreen®?
Only New York State can approve you to take the NCLEX-RN®. Did you apply to the New York State Education Department as well as to the CGFNS Credential Verification Service for New York State? You can apply anytime, but remember, VisaScreen® applications expire in 12 months, and TOEFL® expires in two years.
